At the beginning of my research I used everyday, ordinary magazine covers as examples and case studies and by that I mean magazines with five or six cover lines, a colour scheme of three shades, and lots of attention grabbing features. Examples of this are Vogue, Empire, and Q. There's a generic theme they all follow which I've depicted in this prezi: 
I've always been pro-being unauthentic so when I first analysed the National Geographic cover [x], I was a fan of this layout as it still used traditional magazine features like four colours and six cover lines, but redeveloped them into a modern and minimalist style by placing them all at the bottom of the page. After that I was inspired by raw and fresh format covers, like National Geographic, i-D, and The Gentlewoman. I've also made a prezi showing their individuality:
So, I took elements from both magazines style for my magazine cover. I kept it authentic with a colour scheme of four (white, yellow, pink, and blue), two fonts (DIN Condensed and Times New Roman), and the position of my master head and barcode. Adversely I mixed it up by having one main cover line and anchoring text to that, a border, and by making the barcode white instead of black. A while ago I studied representations [x] and colour [x], and I learnt about how a colour palette can connote something about the model or magazine, so I used contradictory colours. The clothing and makeup are white, red, and black which is a seductive colour scheme due to the way its represented in media. For example:

Betty Boob was a sexy cartoon in the 1930's who sang about how much her audience loved her and how happy she made them. She only ever appeared in a red tight dress with red lipstick and was known for her short black hair and porcelain white skin. The main principle of her character is young, sexy and frisky, so her outfit and the colours help to denote this vibe.
In 2014 Shakira and Rihanna released a song titled "Can't Remember to Forget You" and in the video they danced up and down a corridor wearing black and red dresses, grinding on the walls. The stylists chose to dress them in red and black because red and black symbolise danger, sexiness, and sauciness, which is what Shakira aimed for. In the video for the 2005 song "My Humps" by the Black Eyed Peas, Fergie wears a combination of white, black and red garments as she bops her body to the song about love and sex.
And also red is sexy due to the connotations of roses which are a typical symbol of love. Vice verse pastel colours (the pink, yellow and blue are all specifically pastel shades) are connotations of confectionary and children's toys, innocent and sweet things that are never sexualised. As I explained in my analysis of the magazine cover [x], I wanted there to be this divide between the colours as it's more intriguing than a simple one connotation colour scheme. What I'm trying to say is the mis-en-scene elements are of an alluring and seductive colour palette but the graphic hues were soft and babyish, so these two things clash and that's something I aspired for; I wanted to challenge the ordinary one colour-scheme rule which most magazines abide by.
Another thing I was trying to combat was the several cover line rule. I really admire how i-D magazine summarises who their cover model is, in one or two words. I think it gives us an incite into (obviously the model's personality but more so) what i-D stands for and it creates more of an introduction for the audience which makes me as a reader feel more eager to read. I was following this notion in all my edits up until making the official cover (edit 5), where I decided to add a bit of text underneath, firstly to make the cover look more sophisticated but the other reason as to why I kept it, is because it's like a more detailed introduction which will hopefully encourage readers who don't know who Seah is, to read because they like her momentum.
I knew from the beginning that I wanted to challenge the generic titles "contents page" and "editor's letter", because I wanted something pretentious so that Cherry Bomb seems witty. Therefore I called the contents page "ingredients" because essentially all ingredients are, are components towards a bigger creation, just like the contents of a magazine. Then I called the editor's letter "first word" because I saw Transworld Magazine do this and it was the only alternative name I could think of.
Contents pages always look so professional and preppy, which I don't like. Magazines which aren't polished like Shout and Ok!, which have a savvy contents page's confuse me. I always wonder why are they trying to give the impression that they are slick? Why not just embody their genre in the contents page? Cherry Bomb is a magazine for young people so I am embodying the audience by having a background which links to them, because the majority of young people are studying, so a lined notebook canvas suits the audience.
The other day I was flicking through Tank magazine and National Geographic and what both of them have but in different ways is pages which introduces a double page article. Pictures below:

I've discovered through this evaluation that something I have really aspired to replicate in my magazine is introductions. I admire how these pages slowly sink the reader into the topic, instead of hastily beginning. However a double page poster seemed to lengthy for my magazine, therefore I stripped it down to one page which is the left hand-side of the spread. Once again it shows who Seah Polly is, it tells the reader what the page is about ("10 questions with Seah Polly") and it gives credits to the people who made the article.
And that's another thing I did to contrast the majority of magazines; The other day I was flicking through Glamour and Elle magazine and they displayed the credits for the articles where the pages crease which I thought was rude because it's not giving the artists blatant acknowledgement, and so I knew I wanted to show case the credits in an obvious place, so that my audience will see Cherry Bomb as a crediting and kind establishment.
The textual side of the double page spread is similar to most magazines. In my previous draft [x] I was trying to go against the traditional column layout, however I don't want to confuse the reader and I want to maintain a sense of ordinary-ness, therefore I stuck to an normal layout.

According to the profile and ownership post [x], a reader of Cherry Bomb is a lady in further education between the years of 17 and 21. She is interested in music, fashion and beauty so Cherry Bomb suits her because it focuses on music, fashion and art.

Cherry Bomb's parent company is Time Inc. (source x) which owns countless magazines such as Sports Illustrated, Travel + Leisure, Food & Wine, Fortune, People, InStyle, Life, Golf Magazine, Southern Living, Essence, Real Simple, and Entertainment Weekly. In spite of the dozens of outlets it has, it only has one music magazine which is NME. I chose Time Inc. because Cherry Bomb has a similar minimal format to NME.
NME has one main cover line like Cherry Bomb and only one image, but it differs with a transparent mastered and one puff and no border. Fundamentally both of their layouts are very simplistic and therefore they can easily link to each other as sister and brother companies with the excuse that they both have adopted the minimal aesthetic. Additionally NME is also for young people and according to this slide-share [x], the majority of it's audience are 69% male, which is perfectly paradox to Cherry Bomb's audience which is mainly female. And finally, NME and Cherry Bomb have the same focus as I stated... music. It's obvious from the fact that both of them have musicians as their cover models. Therefore Cherry Bomb is suitable for Time Inc. because I think they need more musical magazines.

(Transcript: Cherry Bomb's audience are young females. I think, generally, females are more attracted to magazines with female models. Not to say that a girl won't read a magazine with a man on it, but according to discussions I've had with my friends, there's sort of a global notion among woman to support other women, so for women I think magazines with female cover models are most popular. And for this reason, I used a female cover model.
The age group I;'m targeting (17-21 year olds) are generation Y, and this is the generation who were the first gineau pigs of social media and blogging forums like tumblr and myspace. Due to this ability to tell your story and globally share your thoughts and feelings at your finger tips, I think being a warrior of social justice is now a part of youth culture. Youths are opinionated about politics, feminism, equalism, islamaphobia, everything like that. Therefore I kept this is mind when picking the colours; I didn't want to push Seah into an overly feminine box, which is why I used blue as well as pink.
Due to their age, I think the audience will include elements of slang in their vocabulary, therefore in the editor's letter I used slang such as "preggerz", "homies" and also multi-modal language like "ily". I think this creates a friendly and familiar connection between the editor and the reader, and also it's light and refreshing, setting the tone as this for the rest of the magazine.
On the ownership and profile page, I said that the reader is likely to be interested in makeup and beauty, and therefore I wanted Seah to have bold makeup, which is why she wore red lipstick on the front cover.
In the double page spread I based my highlighted names, words and phrases on things that will appeal to my target audience. The phrase "teen antics" embodies mischeivious, fun, and happy adolescents, "frank ocean" is an artist who the audience will probably listen to because he produces fun, popular among youths and hip-hop songs. "nirvana" is a state for buddhists but cherry bomb's audience will be so open-minded and broadly educated that they'll understand it.)
The main application which I used to create my magazine was Adobe Photoshop, and the main technology items I used was a camera and a computer. The first thing I did was take pictures using a Nikon P7100 camera, and then I uploaded them to a school computer and edited them. Originally I used an internet application called Pic Monkey, however these edits didn't look as professional as a magazine should so I switched to Adobe Photoshop. I filmed a couple of videos showing how I made the edits but essentially (for the cover), I used the magic wand tool to separate the model from the background and then I copy and pasted her figure onto a coloured background and then used the shape tool to make the border and text to add the text. I think considering the fact that Adobe Photoshop is an exclusive, reliable and also expensive application, it is probably what genuine magazine editors use.
For each of the pages aside from the front cover, I used the application Pages to draft the content. This app was good as it allowed me to quickly make changes and also check my spelling and grammar before actually applying it to the format.
Often, I reverted back to picmonkey.com but this was to resize elements of pages like the barcode or the poloroid picture on the double page spread. One thing I found with photoshop was that one could not resize or reshape images and instead one would be forced to keep it original.
Firstly, I ran out of ideas to promote on the contents page for my preliminary task so I didn't finish that... That's the biggest different between these tasks, however another way I progressed was my break-through into Adobe Photoshop. This application allowed me to experiment with colour, layout, and composition. Thanks to the magic wand tool, I can move figures around in the photo whereas with internet photo editors, I couldn't and so I was stuck with the original (unmanipulated) photography, which was restricting.
In the preliminary task I used my phone to take the photographs, instead of the professional camera I used in my main task. As the camera I used was a DSLR camera, the photographic opportunities were stretched and I could easily orchestrate the lighting or zoom into pictures as I took them. And I could do this with the iPhone 5, however the quality of the picture was very vulnerable and adding extra light and so on, often resulted in the image becoming pixilated.

Photo Analysis

The main image of the cover is important as it depicts the theme of the entire magazine issue, for example for Eco Awareness Month, a nature or science magazine like National Geographic will probably have an environmental image as the main cover picture, as this goes hand in hand with the majority of the content. Also the main image of a magazine's cover roughly represents the audience, an example of this point is Men's Health which usually showcases muscular and fit men as the models, and a consumer of Men's Health magazine is most likely muscular and fit (or aspiring to be). I knew from the off that I wanted to produce a magazine for young women interested in pop so I chose a young female friend of mine, and I ordered a bunch of bright and trendy clothes like the ones which pop artists usually wear. I had my heart set on using the image to the left because I liked the colour's in it and I thought that the way light reflected off the jacket was very modern and contemporary. However I opted for the one to the right because I decided on a soft colour concept.
Behind Seah, the wall, the door, and her shadow were all unnecessary features so I selected them using the magic wand tool and deleted them, using photoshop. This made the canvas entirely transparent apart from the model. Then I made a new canvas and selected a pretty pink and blue hue and using a large but soft brush I created a gradient, and pasted the model into the centre. I think the cover definitely looks young and 'pop-ish', but not too young and childish which is something I wanted to make sure of because I find for mainstream youths within the 16-21 age quartile, there aren't many (affordable) magazines as such. I'm sure I've said this before but I blame the pop-ish style on the colours of the background and the outfit of Seah. So this is the final edited image:
Captivating imagery on contents pages is an intrinsic element because it provides a visual indication of what is inside the magazine and it helps break down the body of text which could look a bit intimidating or too formal left alone. I wanted bright and funky colours, so I was considering the two below on the left, however I chose the one on the right.
I chose the one on the right because the outfit is pastel and the model's facial expression and pose is interesting and different. I made a video s howing the editing process, and this was the finishing product:
This edit works well with the audience because polaroid camera's are certainly a revived device from the near past, with young adults enthusing over them due to Fuji Instax Mini Camera and so they're an interesting frame with a connotation that young people understand(, it should also be noted that it is unlikely a younger audience would know what polaroid camera is).
The editors letter didn't have any images apart from advertisement because I wanted to refine this page from clutter.
Double page spreads in magazines have a superiority sort of, compared to single page spreads, and so the audience expects great content and great imagery from double page spreads. Also double page spreads have to have the same theme as the cover or the magazine in general. Previously I had supported a soft colo ur palette through editing and the mis-en-scene c hoices, so for the double page spread I chose these two images:

Analysis of double page spread edit 2

I feel my double page spread second edit is very successful. The principal reason as to why I like it so much is because it accompanies the contents page and front cover well. This is for numerous reasons, one being the colour… I’ve stuck to the same colour scheme consistently, using the purest shade of white and black, and using the eye drop tool to select the identical yellow, pink and blues. If you compare all the images, they have the precise same hues and because of this there is certainly a sense of continuity and flow. The second thing that is the same is the frames. There’s a yellow border on the cover and a polaroid frame on the contents page, so I intertwined both of these elements to create a polaroid shaped yet block coloured frame. Frames are a feature that Cherry Bomb could be recognised by, like Time magazine with it’s red border and National Geographic with it’s yellow edge, so for this reason I chose to keep them up. A feature that I revisited was gradients. I first did a pink to blue gradient as the backdrop for the front cover, and on the double page spread I did a gradient of blue to yellow to pink above the page number to add a bit of pizzazz and contempary-ness.  To do this I used the rectangular marquee tool and a large paint brush with a very soft edge, and this is the same method as what I did on the cover. Another thing I kept the same was the photographs. Despite the fact I could have used one of the other pictures taken of Seah in a different outfit with a different backdrop, I wanted there to be an obvious link or connection to the cover and the contents page and so I used images from the same photosets.

About a year and a half ago I bought a set of pens called Mildliners which are popular for their mild and pastel colours, so the highlighted bits of the articles were inspired by the colour outcome of this highlighting set. (As seen in my youtube video) I was contemplating changing the colour of the text as well, so I played around with yellow, blue, and (due to random curiosity) brown font before deciding on black font. 

The other day I was reading Dazed magazine and usually in articles, the people who have been a part of the formation (like the photographer and stylists etc.), have their names discretely hidden on the page edge or corner, but in Dazed everyone's name was boldly placed under the title and this looked so fresh and raw, so I mimicked this idea and placed the credits on the main large poloroid.
I added a tiny bit of colloquial language via multi-modal languge in the article, by writing "lol" and "tbh", and I did this because I thought that surely the audience will know and frequently use these words.

When editing the white t-shirt dress image, I made sure not to include a portion of Seah's body, because it made her appear larger and magazines usually advocate slimmer body preportions and I tried to use the Patch Healing Tool to make the appearance of smaller arms, however this didn't really work as it looked messy and edited (I wanted it to look natural), so I scrapped this idea.

Analysis of Contents Page (Edit 2)


  • This edit is a continuation and progression of my last contents page edit. Unlike all my cover edits I didn't create a new idea, instead I just refined and modified my old one. First I changed the image. The previous one was badly edited using the internet, however this one was edited with Adobe photoshop so the shape of Seah is less distorted. Also the block pink background is now a lighter shade because I am striving for a rather pastel issue. This was how I edited the main image:

  • The dress which the model is wearing is actually a collaborative piece between Lazy Oaf and Disney. Disney produces games and movies among other things for children so I thought that this attire would suit the soft and child-like concept of this page.
  • I changed the font to Times New Roman to make the contents look more proffessional as I thought it looked a bit too childish or youthish when in actual fact Cherry Bom's audience is age 17-21. I contextually made some changes with spelling and grammar and I also changed the layout; in the previous edit, the contents page was discussing one spread and so in the bottom right corner it said "on page 20", I thought this might be a tad confusing and indicate that the contents page is page 20, to anyone skimming the page, and so I changed it.
  • I also decided to promote Cherry Bomb's subscription to the audience with free concert tickets because I had a picture that I took at a Beyoncé concert, and the picture had lots of pink highlights and this accompanies the contents page well.

Analysis of Magazine Cover Edit 3


The first thing that I was almost certain of when designing my magazine cover, was that I wanted only one, short coverline. This was motivated by Dazed and I-D magazines, which both advocate this structure. I think it's urban and modern, and it is more personal as it summarises the issue of the magazine or describes the artist. All the magazines which have a similar structure tend to have been made in a similar (and recent) time period, like Tank which was created in 1998, or I-D which was made in 1980, therefore I can assume that this layout is popular with young people which is preferred
considering the fact that the median age of a Cherry Bomb reader is 19. Additionally most of these magazines use a head shot so we only see the models face, however I wanted to show her jacket therefore I opted for a mid shot and she was instructed to turn fractionally rightwards to the camera, which added more dynamic to her face making it a key part of the picture.
The main colours of the magazine are yellow, orange, blue, and purple. Colour is a pretty key part to making the front cover non-boring, and the colour of the jacket is the reason why I chose a mid-shot. Blue and purple are analogous, yellow and orange are also analogous, however
blue and orange are contrasting and purple and yellow are contrasting. I made these colour choices for a range of reasons... Firstly, purple and blue look good together so I wanted the artist to stand against a blue background. Secondly, I thought that these colours blended together too well and instead I wanted them to stand out, so I thought contrasting colours would appropriately do this. The majority of my blue and purple photos were the best pictures, so I also figured that if I used a purple, blue,
orange, and yellow colour scheme, I could probably continue this concept till the double page spread. The shades of yellow and orange I chose are mustardish and offish to some people, but quite daintily pretty and chillaxed to me, so I think they'll be percieved a variety of ways. Before choosing the shades, I was searching google images for magazines popular in the 1960's, and I found that a lot of them supported these shades of yellow and orange. I think this appealed to me as 'old magazines' are not typ ically a fascination for young people, apart from possibly youths who strive to enjoy things outside of
the mainstream, and so re-using a feature of old magazines will probably be enthused by Cherry Bomb's audience.
I chose to make the coverline "evolving" partially because this word is interesting and captivating, and it makes the audience wanna know exactly what is the context. I mainly c hose to make the line "evolving" because it suits the colour scheme... The orange and yellows are oldish (inspired by the 1960's), the blue is modern and relevant to today (as block colours are trendy), and the jacket is futuristic (because it is holographic). So the link with evolution is the transition of colours.

Analysis of Contents Page (Edit 1)

The contents page of Cherry Bomb is my favourite part, because it is 100% a self-made idea. I decided to make the background lined A4 paper as the magazine doesn't aim to be illustrious or professional, instead it aims to be amateur and this simple and everyday background serves this purpose. Also it's not too bold with mainly white interjected by the tiniest bit of baby blue, therefore I think it suits.
The colour scheme on this page differs from the rest of the book as it's pink, white, blue, and black, Pink and blue are both fun, vibrant, and again, not too professional or sleek. I chose the image because I wanted pink and blue because in a stereotypical sense, blue epitomes boy and pink is the pinnacle colour for girls, and I don't want Cherry Bomb to sway more towards one gender than the other, because in it's rawest form, Cherry Bomb is a music magazine for young people, White is the main colour and the least present colour, as it was the colour of the canvas but only present via the transparent doodles or the transparent page lines.I think because it isn't excessively white, the colour doesn't look to simple or minimal, but instead just like a refined doodle pad.
The title of the contents page was ingredients because, essentially, ingredients are things which are combined to make a big thing. Ingredients is only really placed in the context of food, but I thought that this title suited the ostentatious and showy audience. 
The main image differs from the cover image and double-page image as it's a different set of colours. I've said this before in a previous post but the image is dynamic and interesting as the model is shutting her eyes and sort of swaying her body and her frock, so I wanted to include this image. The image is framed with a poloroid as these are popular and also very casual, which is what Cherry Bomb strives for. The poloroid is tilted because I wanted it to look not-so geometric and precise, and like a dimensional poloroid inside an actual notepad.
I placed doodles in various parts of the book to make the book look like an authentic notepad with cute scribbles from the owner.
However, I'll have to recreate the cover as I used a secondary image to promote sponsoring the magazine, which isn't allowed.

Magazine Contents Page

Plan: 

My concept for the contents page is based off bullet journals or notebook pages. This contents page layout will suit the audience because as I said in my ownership and profile post, the age group of Cherry Bomb's audience is 17-21 and this age quartile is usually inside some sort of educational institute meaning that bullet journals and note books are a common feature in their daily life. Also I think because the text will look hand-written and the overall page will havecollage-art style, the contents page will have a sort of normal and friendly vibe, and similar to colloquial language, i intend on it looking like something the reader would create (similar to colloquial language because that's words that the reader would say), so I think it will attract an audience with these qualities.  
This is the template that I've made for the cover:
The template looks overcrowded however I think that with a simplistic colour scheme, the contents page won't look too cluttered. Appose to "contents page" or "spread", I'll title my contents page 'ingredients' or something else synonymous because this is pretencious and that's perfect for attracting a audience of impressionable and aspiring-hipster teenagers and young adults. This is my colour scheme:  
The left column is the colour options for the main body of text, the centre column are options for the background and the right column includes colours which may be included in one content's issue, however the colour will probably be angalous with either the front cover image or the photograph on the contents page, and there will only be one vibrant colour.
